Saturday Strolling
Aside from getting cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping done, the main priority on my list yesterday was to stop by The Strand bookstore to get some reading material for an upcoming trip. But since I was in a mood for wandering (as is usually the case), that's exactly what I did. And my wandering led me to the Lower East Side so of course I stopped at the New Museum. I was very impressed with the new exhibition Here and Elsewhere and highly recommend you check it out. It's poignant, informative, and beautifully installed.

Sunday Photo Challenge
The idea of these photo challenges is that you are supposed to take one photo per hour to tell a story about your day. Well, I didn't exactly take one photo per hour (vacuuming and doing laundry didn't seem worthy of photos) but here's a photo tour of my Sunday.
Breakfast! Berries, grapefruit, kefir and granola.
Finish up a post for Jackie Times on Tumblr.
Set out fresh dandelion greens and water for Crusader.
Pick out an outfit for the day. This one is perfect for work and play, plus I can wear my dance gear underneath.
Go for a walk to Madison Square Park to check out Rachel Feinstein's installations.
Dance it out in ballet class at Alvin Ailey!
Head into work and spend some time in MoMA Studio: Breathe with Me to conduct observations...and respond to a few prompts during the lulls.
Pack up and take home the ceramics I made in Allison Smith: American Pre-Modern class a couple months ago.
Check out all the Tony Awards action at Radio City Music Hall.
Stop in at the Amish Market along Ninth Avenue for some kiwi (5 for $2!).
Enjoy a refreshing slice of watermelon. Yum!
A little ballet practice.
Book + a big mug of tea
Well, that's my Sunday. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Color that Permeates
This post is from a couple of weeks ago on one of my gallery hopping excursions in Chelsea. As always, I was most drawn to the works where color was so prominent (and such a part of the work) that it seemed to permeate the space around it.

So much art to see
A couple weeks ago I saw so much great art over the course of 3 days that it only made me want to see more. Between the Independent Art Fair and the Armory Show I also checked out several shows in Chelsea that had been on my list of 'must see' for awhile. What a great weekend! Looking forward to more art filled weekends!

Feeling like an Easter Egg
On this particular day, I decided to pair it with the necklace and earrings I purchased at the MoMA Staff Sale. I still can't believe I found a bunny necklace and earrings! And to think I wasn't even going to check out the sale. Meant To Be. I think adding these accessories to this dress may be why I now keeping thinking about Easter but I do think they go nicely with the whole outfit. It puts me in a happy mood, one of the great things about crafting personal style.

Rainy Day: Blue Skies Above
I left for work really early this morning hoping to beat the thunder and lightening storms that were supposed to erupt but of course those never happened. I'm getting pretty tired of inaccurate weather forecasts. Oh well! I enjoyed the early morning walk though and even the steady rain. You would think the air would feel cooler with some rain but it was super humid and I was glad I decided to wear this light weight dress. To me, rainy mornings are always so much more enjoyable when I have a pair of wellies on; I especially love these cornflower blue ones by Hunter. I have to admit to twirling my umbrella a little whenever I'm walking in the rain. There's something about walking in the rain with wellies on that makes you feel like a kid again. It doesn't hurt that MoMA's Sky Umbrella has a cheery cloudscape underneath that's perfect for twirling...even on the darkest, stormiest day it's like there's a bright patch of sky right above me.

Taking Photos for a Style Blog in NYC....Not An Easy Feat
I don't know how other style bloggers in NYC manage to take photos in the city without them seeming rushed or awkward. I am definitely far from mastering that. First of all, it's so hard to actually just stop, much less set up any kind of shot. I don't have a tripod but it's not something I'd even attempt setting up in the city. Generally, I have family, friends and sometimes strangers snap a quick picture for my blog posts but the end results vary widely...busy sidewalks and a quick point and click shot aren't exactly ideal circumstances for a good photo. But I much prefer the results to that of 'selfies' and the strange perspective that always creates.
One thing I have noticed is that the photos taken on the weekend turn out better than during the weekday which probably has more to do with me than the actual environment in which a photo is taken. During the week I'm typically rushing to and from work and trying to get a bunch of other things done, but on the weekend the pace is much more relaxed. Setting the self timer on my camera works well but I only ever do that in my apartment building for obvious reasons. Perhaps in a less crowded part of NYC I could set the self timer and walk away from my camera long enough for the photo to be taken but I doubt this is a real possibility. I do prefer outdoor photos though and enjoy capturing some of my favorite places in each post.
Who knows, one day I might actually figure out the trick to taking photos for a style blog outside in a "pretend no one else is around" kind of way but until then.....

Restyling an Old Sundress

I’ve had this navy/almost black sundress for about 15 years. I remember buying the dress in Athens following an archaeological excavation I was on with Brock University. It was (is!) the perfect lightweight dress for travel….easily packed, wrinkle resistant and great for throwing on over a swimsuit. I still like the look of the dress but it’s pretty sheer and on its own doesn’t feel very appropriate for work. Today I decided to turn this simple sundress into a more complete look by pulling on a blouse over top and wearing it with a pair of leggings. When the A/C kicked in, I pulled on a light cardigan. The neutral beige and navy coloring found in the dress and cardigan hold up well when paired with the splash of color from the blouse and the punchy colors of the embroidered flowers on the cardigan. It always feels good when you can find a new way to wear an older item in your closet.
P.S. If you are ever in Hell’s Kitchen, check out Schmackary’s at the corner of 9th Ave. and W 45!

I Never Got to Go to Space Camp…Maybe it’s Not Too Late?
When Space Camp debuted in movie theaters, my campaign to ‘train like an astronaut’ picked up steam….and it’s also when my crush on Joaquin Phoenix (known as ‘Leaf’ Phoenix at that time) began. Is it a coincidence that Star Wars premiered in the year I was born? I don’t think so (fyi, I still can’t turn off the original trilogy should any of them happen to be on when I flip on the TV).
When I was around 6, I attempted to build my cat Ginger a time machine in the kid’s clubhouse in my grandparent’s yard. Ginger was getting up there in years and I thought that perhaps some time travel would help him regain a few more years. I had read Time Cat over and over again, as well as watched The Cat From Outer Space and The Three 3 Lives of Thomasina with such regularity that eventually the VHS tapes busted.

For many years, the ceiling of my bedroom was covered in glow-in-the-dark stars, planets and comets, my wall had maps of the solar system and there were a few astronomy and stargazing books on my bookshelf. I lived for camping out in my backyard with some binoculars to stare up at our solar system.
I may still be a little space obsessed. It wasn’t too long ago on a family visit to Walt Disney World in Florida that I lined up to ride Mission: SPACE at EPCOT repeatedly. I’ll watch almost any space theme movie as long as it’s not completely cheesy. I may even still secretly dream of going to Space Camp.
This is all to say that I didn’t really think twice about purchasing a dress that looked like a page from one of my old solar system books. A drop waist, virtually wrinkle free dress covered in celestial images, and it happened to be on sale…..what’s not to love?

Photos taken at MoMA (11 W 53) and Healthy Corner Juice Bar (637 9th Avenue - Try the Hell’s Kitchen juice blend if you go!
This dress is super comfortable (and FUN!) to wear and doesn’t get all full of static or wrinkles as the day progresses which makes it perfect for running errands (or chilling at the AMNH Planetarium). I also think it works as an all season dress depending on what layers and accessories you add, plus it’s a good base for experimenting with pops of color, neutrals and/or metallics. Brings a whole new meaning to dressing like you’re from a different planet….
