Sculptural Entities Inhabiting the Plaza at Lincoln Center

I happened to walk past Lincoln Center while running errands this morning and was happily surprised by what I saw.  Colorful aluminum creatures and contorted shapes beckoned from the plaza around the Revson Fountain. I soon learned that the 14 monumental sculptures were created by LA based artist Aaron Curry and the entire installation is called "Melt to Earth." The sculptures are very cool, adding an interesting dialogue between the more traditional arts setting and the contemporary, streetwise contours of the sculptural structures . I saw all ages interacting with the sculptures in a variety of ways, even the fountain seemed to play with their fluid designs and fantastical shapes. Every time I looked at any of the sculptures I saw something different: faces, animals, plants, shapes morphing into other shapes; the sculptures seem to have a "not from this planet" kind of vibe that really adds a unique character to the the whole Lincoln Center complex. Encountering something surprising and fun is one of the things I love best about living in NYC. I never would have expected to see these sculptures in Lincoln Center but I'm very pleased that they are installed there.  "Melt to Earth" will be up until January 2013 so if you have a chance to visit, go and check this installation out.

Bows and Pink Crochet Meet Studded Detailing and Faux Leather

This week was one of those weeks that seemed to both drag on and speed by...very strange. Monday was a holiday (Columbus Day) so it was a shorter work week too but perhaps that's why it was such an odd week in terms of pacing. Anyways, it ended up being a pretty productive week which is always a good thing, especially when the week gets off to a slower start.

On Thursday a couple of friends/colleagues and I went to Anthropologie to participate in their Holiday Window Display Workshop. We wrapped and hot glued yarn around dowels for over an hour, and although it wasn't the most exciting craft it was pretty fun and definitely relaxing.  There's something about repetitive actions, like folding paper, stamping note cards etc. that is very soothing.

The outfit in the photos above is actually from Friday, probably the coolest day of the week; I think the lingering rays of summer warming our autumn days are now behind us. I miss the warm temperatures but I'm excited about all the things to come this fall and winter. On a side note, still in the process of growing my hair out from pixie cut stage....hence the hairband and awkward hair.

Open House New York

As part of Open House New York this weekend my cousin and I went on Broadway Tour which began at the Times Square Museum. Generally I love any walking tour but I can't say I enjoyed this one (long story/number of reasons) but at least my cousin seemed to enjoy it which is the main reason I booked our tickets anyways.  I did, however, think the Times Square museum was pretty cool mostly because I had no idea that it was even there even though I've passed by it many times. And the weather was beautiful this weekend so that was also a plus.  I still find this time of year confusing in terms of figuring out what to wear since one second it feels chilly outside and the next it's almost balmy. Autumn = the season of adding on and taking off layers of clothing on the same day.

Wear What You Like

When I was in kindergarten and elementary school I used to get teased about having skinny legs, more often by certain relatives but occasionally other children. It annoyed me but it didn't really stop me from wearing shorts and sundresses or participating in gymnastics and dance classes. Even as a young kid I did my own thing no matter what anyone else said, and that included wearing whatever I wanted.  I definitely became more  hyper aware of certain remarks as I grew up and moved into adulthood which is pretty typical I think. And then of course all the noise from peers and societal preferences start pouring in, like what's on trend, is this right for my size/shape/age/coloring and all the rest of it.  While I can't admit to fully being able to tune all of that out, I definitely think I managed to continue being myself and dressing how I wanted to.  My point is, wear what you like because you're the one wearing it so why not like what you wear.

Today, for example, I decided to wear one of my favorite skirts. I love everything about it: the bright green, the embroidery, the shape, the material and even the length.  It's also a great spring to summer to fall transitional piece. Yes, it's a little on the short side and probably according to some dumb fashion rule I shouldn't be wearing a skirt of this length at my age but honestly I could care less.

Lions and Lines

When I left my apartment today it looked like it was going to rain but thankfully it didn’t since I hadn’t packed an umbrella. I can carry an umbrella around for days and it never rains and the moment I take it out it usually does….not the case today.

No big plans today, a few errands to run and a pop-up exhibition I wanted to check out. I sort of feel like just walking around the city is enough excitement some days. When I first moved here, I would around and think “oh wow” at every turn; there was always something fascinating to see or experience. I still get that sense of awe/wonder as I’m walking around, especially on days when I’m not in a hurry to get some place else. I wonder if everyone who moves here from somewhere else experiences this, and if they do, does it go away at any point…hopefully not.

Any time I’m in the Bryant Park area or happen to visit the Mid-Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library, I always stop at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

You can do some great people watching along Fifth Avenue. Also, the little tables and chairs around the perimeter of the library are great places to stop for a light snack, to do some reading or just enjoy the setting.

Look up and say “Hello” to Patience and Fortitude, the two marble lions that seem to stand guard over the Beaux-Arts Building.

The NYPL always puts together great exhibitions.

I’m constantly amazed by the beautiful window displays along Fifth Avenue.

Yes, I did do a twirl in the middle of the sidewalk. Don’t worry, I looked both ways first.

Urban Fabric exhibition. The sign says “come in” but the doors locked. Typical, that I arrive too early. (I did go back at noon though. If you are interested, you can check out the photos I took here).

I’ve stood in more lines than I ever did before since moving to NYC. Sometimes I think people see a line and just get in it, thinking they might miss out on something if they don’t get in the line. Some lines don’t even move, like George Segal’s “The Commuters.” Funny story, when I was posing for this photo, two little children started to line up behind me…really wish that would have been caught in this photo.

Seriously, why isn’t this line moving?  Happy Friday!
