On Foot, Through Tunnel, By Water: I Love This City

Sometimes it's really fun to play the tourist.  And even though I haven't lived in NYC that long, I love showing this city off to visitors. Since Saturday, August 3 was the first Summer Streets of this year, I decided that it would be a great way to start the day. It's such a treat being able to walk down Park Avenue with no cars.  I really wanted to see Lorenzo-Hemmer's Voice Tunnel installation and my dad seemed interested in it, so we headed over to E 33 and Park Avenue to enter the tunnel. The line to enter the tunnel went down the street and around the corner but it seemed to be moving so we got in line. I think the wait was only about 30 minutes, and once we signed the waiver and got our hands stamped we were able to enter.  I thought it was totally worth the wait.  The tunnel felt alive. Walking down the center of the tunnel, the recorded messages sounded like a low rumble, but when you walked near the speakers along the edge of the tunnel you could hear what people had recorded. I love how the lights traveled down the roof of the tunnel, making the tunnel feel like it was moving and then just as suddenly we were all plunged into darkness. If you get a chance to see this, go!

After checking out some of Summer Streets, we got on a New York Water Taxi at Pier 84. We got off at South Street Seaport and had lunch at Frances Tavern on Pearl Street (which is also a museum) and then boarded the boat again for DUMBO. It's always so nice walking along the water, very peaceful in comparison to the busy sidewalks of Manhattan. Jane's Carousel is gorgeous, set inside its glass structure like an intricate and glistening piece of jewelry. Wandering around, looking at all the brick and wood constructed buildings in this part of Brooklyn is a lot of fun. And it's easy to pass some time just sitting on a bench taking in the Manhattan skyline.  After spending a couple of hours in DUMBO, we got back on the water taxi and headed over to see the Statute of Liberty. This was definitely my favorite part of the water excursion. There's nothing like seeing New York City from the water or seeing Lady Liberty up close. I love this city!
