On the Boardwalk: Old Time Fun at Coney Island

Old roller coaster car...whoa!

Strolling the boardwalk

I wonder if the people in those apartments ever getting tired of view? I doubt it.

Legendary.

Treats and more treats.

Neon and pastel carousel. Perfection.

Bird's eye view from atop a burger.

Grandmothers always know best.

After three summers in NYC I am embarrassed to admit this was the first summer I went to Coney Island. I know, I know. No excuses, especially as it is so easy to get to.  Well, I made it there this summer at least and it was a beautiful day to be there too.  Even though I had seen a lot of photos and video of Coney Island and the boardwalk I didn't really have a good idea of what the place looked like. Oh sure, I knew there'd be rides, concession stands, old signage,  and a shoreline that seems to go on forever but you can't really know until you visit a place. I liked Coney Island far more than I thought I would...I guess I wasn't expecting the boardwalk and the beach to be so vast, nor the amusement park landscape to be so vibrant (and clean)!  There were moments that afternoon when I actually did feel I had stepped back in time. So even though amusement park rides, fried foods and sun bathing aren't really my things, I had a wonderful time! And now I'll resume singing Bette Midler's 'Under the Boardwalk' in my head...

Simple Summer Activities

Simple summer activities are the ones I always miss the most. With summer coming to a close (*sigh), I've been walking along the Hudson River more, getting in all the sunshine and river breezes that I can.  It's fun watching boats of every variety moving about the water; tourist site-seeing boats, tug boats, ferries, yachts, and more, cutting patterns in the river.  Walking along the water's edge is one of my favorite summer activities, and I'll miss it once the colder temperatures and icy winds have closed in.  I stopped in at one of the garden centers by my apartment and noticed more autumnal flowers and plants than they had a couple of weeks ago. So many gorgeous autumnal shades of orange, gold and purple and hearty greens, but still I already miss the soft pastels, brilliant whites and feathery plants of spring and summer. What activities are you going to miss once summer is over?

Already getting darker out earlier in the evening...you know what that means

I think I'm in denial that the first week of August is almost over. I've seen and done a lot this summer but I still have a lot of things on my list. One of them is seeing Cinderella on Broadway.  As if the Rodgers and Hammerstein score weren't enough of a reason to see this show, there's the added draw of the elaborate costumes and sets. I'm also curious to see what new twists they've added to the production. There's usually a 2 for 1 offer on Broadway tickets in the fall though so that's probably the best time to go. Anyways, there's a lot more on my 'must see and do' list but not a lot of summer left.

I'm sad to see it getting dark so early at night already and I miss waking up early and seeing the sun pouring in the windows.  I walked home with a cardigan on today and wasn't even hot.....a couple of weeks ago I wouldn't even dream of stepping foot outside with a cardigan on.  I'm determined to wear my summery dresses as far past summer as possible. Some are easily winterized but I have a few that I'll have to pack away till next year.

This Lepidoptera dress (or pouffy butterfly dress as I call it) is pretty sturdy and the print has a lot of autumnal colors so I can get away with wearing it late into October when I add a pair of tights, cardigan and boots.  As much as I dislike packing away some of my favorite dresses till next year, the positive side of it is the joy of unpacking them and being able to wear them again; not being able to wear them for awhile makes me appreciate them all the more.

Still, some days I feel more like Rudy Huxtable did in the Cosby episode "It Ain't Easy Being Green."

Canada Day in NYC

Saturday, June 29 I celebrated Canada Day in Central Park.  Kind of strange, isn’t? The idea that there’s a celebration of Canada Day in New York City may be surprising in itself, but even stranger is that Canada Day actually isn’t until July 1 (today!).
The highlight of the celebration for me was seeing/hearing Spirit of the West perform. Although, I’ve seen them in concert several times, it’s always special when you see one of your favorite bands in an unexpected place. Spirit of the West tunes have long been on my travel playlist; listening to them is like carrying a little piece of home with you wherever you go.  I also remember  when a night out wasn’t over until we heard the band play a cover of “Home for a Rest!" Lots of great memories attached to the music of Spirit of the West!
Happy Canada Day!
